Top of the Class Thursday: Get to Know SVHS Valedictorian Bethany Mann

April 3, 2025 - Smithson Valley High School Valedictorian Bethany Mann gives us an inside look into her high school experience in a graduation Q+A.

How did you find out you were Valedictorian?

Smithson Valley High School runs rank every year, and sophomore year was the first time I found out I was first in my class. I was shocked! I never planned to go after being number one, but as soon as I was in that position I realized I want to work for this. It’s been stressful because of how competitive it is, but when my counselor Ms. Bush called me to deliver the news, I felt relief like I could finally just breathe.

Can you share what your speech is going to be about?

My favorite movie is Dead Poets Society, and a big part of the movie is the poem "O me! O life!" by Walt Whitman. The poem focuses on what your verse will be. That theme inspired my speech because we are graduating and about to go out into the world where we will be writing our own verses.

Describe the entirety of your high school experience in one word.

Impactful.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Super speed, because then I'd have amazing time management and could get things done faster.

What's your favorite way to relax?

I love a good early 2000’s teen drama! It’s between watching tv and just laying in bed, that is how I like to relax.

If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be?

Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women. She was an advocate for women’s rights and the ideologies she supported were ahead of her time - there just weren’t many women like her in the late 1800’s. I’d want to show her how far women have come and just get to know her on a personal level. For dinner, I think I would take her to a fast food restaurant, since there weren’t any during her time.

Who would you say is your biggest supporter? Why?

My mom and my sister. They have just always been there for me.

If your high school experience was a movie, what movie would it be?

The Greta Gerwig adaptation of Little Women, because that is what my family dynamic is like. I have three sisters and a strong mother figure. I think I relate a lot to the family relationships within the movie as well as the themes of creativity and the freedom to explore my interests. It may not be school based, but my family is who shaped me.

What are your plans after graduation?

I am going to Texas A&M University and majoring in Political Science. I’d like to work in public policy regarding public education reform. My family has a huge connection to education, my mom is a teacher and my grandad was the founding principal of Goodwin Frazier Elementary. Education is in my blood and I want to dedicate my life to supporting our school systems.

What is a piece of advice you'd give your younger self?

There is no point in trying to be someone you are not.

Thank you Bethany Mann for Growing Greatness on your Path to Success!
