Superintendent, New Braunfels Mayor and Student Athletes Celebrate Read Across America Day

March 2, 2023 - New Braunfels Mayor Rusty Brockman and Comal ISD Superintendent Dr. John E. Chapman III celebrated Read Across America Day this morning with students at Oak Creek Elementary.

Mayor Brockman read the classic “If You Give a Moose a Muffin” to Danielle McGaha’s first-grade class while Superintendent Dr. Chapman read “Johnny Appleseed” to Lindsey Blair’s first-grade class.

They were joined by Canyon High School football, volleyball and cross country athletes as well as members of the Comal ISD Board of Trustees including Board President Jason York, Board Treasurer Tim Hennessee and Trustee Courtney Biasatti. District administrators were also on hand to read books to various classes from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Second-grade students in Jessica Harley’s class were excited to talk about the “Creepy Carrots” book, which was read by Tyson King and Harry Benson, both members of the CHS Cougar football team.

Students in Bonnie Martin’s fourth-grade math class listened to CHS football players Grayson Coyne and Philip Loustaunau read “The Smart Cookie,” while CHS cross country athletes Taylor Cochran and Alexia Tiscareno-Macias read the same book to Ashley Rogers’ kindergarten class.

“I enjoyed seeing how engaged they were and how many questions they asked,” said Tiscareno-Macias who loves to read herself. “It was a really good experience.”

For many of the high school students, like Coyne and Loustaunau, it was fun to be back on their elementary campus and relive their own childhood memories.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Read Across America Day, which is celebrated annually on March 2, coinciding with the birthday of Dr. Seuss. It is part of an initiative created by the National Education Association to encourage reading in children.
